DIY Vintage Books

I’m sitting here trying to write this blog post but I’m so distracted because I CAN’T STOP watching footage from the royal wedding!!! Anyone with me?!?! Meghan Markle is just gorgeous and living a real life fairytale. *Sigh* The dress, the vows, the choir, all the heart eyes for everything!

How to: Reupholster an Ottoman

reupholstering an ottoman

It’s been quite a week over here. Landon has been going through his 18 month sleep regression, which has been the toughest one yet. He was waking up in the middle of the night and staying awake for hours or waking up between 4am-5am and would not go back to sleep. I think what has made it so much tougher is that he’s also in that crazy toddler phase of asserting his independence but yet not being able to communicate what he wants, which makes for some awesome tantrums. Couple that with being extremely tired and you’ve got a recipe for some long nights and even longer days! There’s been an excessive amount of coffee consumed over here, just in case you were wondering 🙂

Faux Greenery

faux greenery

When I first started getting into home décor I would buy real plants and new flowers every week. While I love the smell of some fresh flowers in my home, I realized I was spending A LOT of money on flowers every week. On top of that, I don’t have a green thumb (we’ve talked about this before…spent $200 on a fiddle fig tree, supposedly VERY easy to keep alive, but I killed it with a few months…smh) so buying live plants was also a waste of money. Finally, I started investing in faux greenery and flowers. Why did I not do this sooner?!?! I mean, they don’t need water, they don’t need light and they’ll always look great. What’s easier than that??

But…not all faux greenery is created equal. You really need to take your time and do a little research first. Or, just follow my lead because I’ve already done the hard work for you! I’m sharing my favorite faux greenery and florals that are out there right now plus a few tips on what to look for when shopping for your own.

faux greenery

1. Ikea
A few years ago, I never would have thought of Ikea as a place to get faux plants and florals but that is so not the case. These little plants are so great and so inexpensive, I have them all over my house year-round. Just switch out the containers for a new look. When you are shopping for floral or greenery stems as opposed to plants, you want to pay attention to the look of the stems. You don’t want anything that is very obviously plastic. It should be modeled after how that particular stem looks in real life. Like the Eucalyptus stems listed below, zoom in on the stem. They are made of plastic but they are brown and have contours to look like a twig. Its all in the details.
Here are my faves:
Oregano Plant
Rosemary Plant
Fern Plant
Ranunculus Stem
Daisy Stem
Eucalyptus Stem

2. Pottery Barn
After my real fiddle fig tree died, I went on the hunt for a fake one. When it comes to faux trees and wreaths, those are the 2 categories I would spend a little more on to get a better product. Cheaper trees and wreaths are going to look just that, cheap. After searching through every faux fiddle fig I could find, I settled on the one pictured above, from Pottery Barn. I will link it with my other PB favorites below:
1. Fiddle Fig Tree
2. Lemon Tree
3. Olive Tree

3. Michael’s
I’ve had a lot of luck with garland and seasonal florals at Michaels. As far as their year-round florals, it can be hit or miss. The floral stems are usually so messy that I have no desire to walk through the aisle but every now and then I find something great. Right now they have a really great faux peony that I’ve thought about buying, BUT they are $12 a stem. Very real looking, but I’m gonna wait for a coupon to make that purchase. I believe they are also in-store only, because I can not find them online. Take a look back at my Fall Home Tour, I bought all of my fall garlands, wreaths and pumpkins from Michaels. The trick here is you have to shop early. I think I bought a lot of this last August. The really good styles sell out quick so when they launch their new season, buy your favorites right away and store them until you need to decorate. Top picks from Michaels:
Mixed Fern Garland (pictured above)
Fern Bush (click here to see these in my front door décor)

4. Hobby Lobby
I don’t talk about Hobby Lobby very much, but that’s only because there isn’t one near me. But…that will be remedied by Memorial Day weekend and I AM STOKED about it 🙂 They have a HUGE assortment of faux florals and I’m really excited to be able to shop it in person very soon so stay tuned for lots of product from Hobby Lobby in the future.

DIY Candle Holder

DIY candle holder

Here comes another one of those DIY’s that is a result of me not being able to find exactly what I want in a store 🙂 Turned candle holders are hard to find, and tall turned candle holders, even harder. These little cuties are SO easy to make, I think I had them put together in about 10 minutes, then paint, sand and you’ve got yourself some new décor.

China Hutch Upcycle

I didn’t actually realize how long this project had been in the works until I sat down to write about it. For those who follow me on Instagram, you might remember the stories I posted about this hutch. I found it last year in May and HAD to have it. The problem, it is HUGE, weighs a ton and we don’t have a truck to haul it with.

DIY Front Door Decor

spring front door decor

I picked up these faux fern sprays from Michaels in the fall and haven’t used them until now. They are pretty large and bushy and I was struggling to find a bucket, basket or pot that they looked natural in, nothing was really working until I came across this hanging olive bucket at The Urban Coop. If you live in the Portland, OR area, love farmhouse style and haven’t been to this little shop, I HIGHLY recommend making a trip. It is the cutest little shop with beautiful items and I have to stop myself from buying too many things each time I go.

Christmas Table Décor

IMG_9131

Anyone else feel like Christmas is just sneaking up on us? How is December already halfway over?!?! I had all my decorations out the weekend of Thanksgiving, and somehow, I’m still not done decorating everything! Could it be because I keep redecorating areas I’ve already decorated? Hmm…

Holiday Wood Sign

IMG_9101

So many cute holiday signs out there this year. I saw so many different versions, I couldn’t decide which one to buy. Finally, I saw one that I liked, it was on the Instagram account of a local boutique that I follow. The problem, the actual boutique is not very close to where I live and the thought of making the trip, in recent weeks, just didn’t seem that fun. Why is it that I’m so willing to drive anywhere and everywhere in the summer but not in the winter? It’s gotta be the weather. I am NOT a cold weather fan. Continue reading

DIY Holiday Wreath

IMG_9048

So, this was not a project or post I had planned on, it pretty much happened on accident while I was decorating the mantle today. I had a different plan as to what I was hanging above the mantle and hated how it turned out so I started over and this is what I came up with. I actually LOVE how this wreath turned out and wanted to share with you how simple it was.

DIY Baby Gate

Ok…let’s get something out of the way. November kicked my butt. Big time. I took this break from blogging to get my stuff together, get organized, be more consistent. And, October was great! I posted consistently, I was happy with what I was posting. Then, November happened. Halloween (ok, that’s October, but still) and DIY Halloween costumes, Landon’s first birthday and a fun party to celebrate him (where I may or may not have gone a bit overboard with the theme and décor), a trip to California for a family wedding which included Landon’s first airplane ride, and was promptly followed by his first cold, and then Thanksgiving. Fall Home Tour

IMG_8506

We officially have a walking baby!! Landon has been taking a few wobbly steps each day but last night he walked all the way across the living room! It was cute, exciting and terrifying all at the same time 🙂 With each new milestone comes a whole new stage of unexpectedness (I’m going to pretend that’s a word).

DIY Toy Box

IMG_8268

I think I officially have a toddler. I mean, when I spend the entire day either chasing the little munchkin or saying “No, Landon…no, no, no….Landon, that’s not to play with” that equals toddler, right?!?! When he first learned what the word “no” meant, he would usually stop whatever behavior I was saying no to. Now, he is testing the limits and repeating the behavior, over and over and over. The latest, picking food up off his high chair tray, holding his food-filled fist for me to see and dropping it while I tell him not to drop the food. Big heavy sigh.

Small Buffet Upcycle

IMG_8378

Hi everyone!!! Wow, it feels like I’ve been gone for SO LONG! I mean, 2 months isn’t forever but still, I missed posting for you and I’m glad to be back at it. Thank you for hanging in there while I took a little break. I was able to accomplish quite a few things around the house, get myself organized and reprioritize what I want and need to do with this blog going forward. I’m so excited to get back to sharing things with you and have so many fun projects in store, so I hope you love them as much as I do!

DIY Chalkboard Sign

IMG_8073

Confession…I love chalkboards. Or, I love creating cute little works of art on chalkboards. Weird, I know. I have created some fun chalkboard signs for my mom’s business and thought it was time I have one in my home. I created a new photo gallery wall in our living room and took down the old gallery wall which was hanging in this space.

You know the best way to wake up early on a Tuesday morning? To the sound of your dog getting sick. I mean, nothing gets you to jump out of bed and on your feet faster. And then try going back to sleep after that. Two things that I thought would be an issue having dogs with a baby or small child. 1) That the dogs would take or chew on the baby’s toys and 2) the dogs are going to get a little “thicker” when the baby starts eating solid food and can therefore feed the dogs 🙂

When I got to the point of being ready and able to start getting projects done again, with the urging of my husband, I knew I needed to finish up some things I had started before I got pregnant. A few examples…

Spring Décor Favorites

I’ve been shopping up a storm lately.

Ok, that’s not really something new. I guess the difference is, I’m being very particular about the things I buy for the house. Only making a purchase for an item I’ve really thought about, searched it out and have a specific spot for it. In the past, I would just go shopping, see something I like, buy it, and then get home and not really like it with anything else in the room.

Nursery Side Table

Landon is officially moved into the nursery! He has slept in his own room the last 3 nights. I’d like to say it’s going well but…not so much. His first night was amazing, slept 8pm to almost 7am, only waking up twice for his pacifier. The last 2 nights and now today, however, have been a bit more challenging.

DIY Floating Shelves

I am so excited to FINALLY share this project with you all! I have been working on it for what feels like forever. Wait…you mean…having a baby will drastically change the amount of time in the day you have to accomplish things?!?! Case in point, I’ve been trying to write this blog post for 3 days now 🙂

Inspired by…black & white

We are going on hour 12 of baby sleep! He woke up at 5:45 to eat, but other than that, has been out since 9pm last night 🙂 I’ve been doing a little trial and error as far as sleep routines go and we may have found a good balance yesterday. I’ll keep it going for a few days and report back if continues to be this successful.
