We attempted to take Landon for photos with the Easter Bunny today. It wasn’t very successful. Landon was terrified! Like, whites of his eyes, fists clenched around his dad’s arms, high pitched scream, terrified. He wanted absolutely nothing to do with that bunny 🙂 I can’t blame him though, those Easter bunny costumes are scary!! Oh well, there’s always next year.
I’ve been seeing different articles online and photos on Pinterest of Easter eggs dyed with food coloring and shaving cream. They look pretty, but…shaving cream? Does that seem gross to anyone else? Maybe I’m the only one who eats the eggs after the egg hunt. Just don’t know that I’d feel good eating something that sat in shaving cream (stuff can get through the egg shell, you know?!?!).
Anyway, I thought I’d give the same technique a try with whipped cream, and it actually worked really well. The eggs came out with a very pretty pastel tie-dye effect, which is exactly what I was going for.
Supplies
a dozen hard boiled eggs, room temperature
muffin tin
whipped cream, extra creamy
food coloring
a spoon
toothpicks
1. Divide the whipped cream evenly between the cups of your muffin tin, approximately 1 large, heaping spoonful each.
2. Add 5 drops of food coloring to each muffin cup. I stuck with the basic primary color food coloring (red, yellow, green, blue). You can stick with 1 color per egg or mix colors to get a true tie-dyed look. When you add your food coloring, be sure to let the color drop in different locations and not all 5 drops right in the middle.
3. Use a toothpick to gently swirl the food coloring through the whipped cream. Do not swirl too much, you don’t want the color completely combined as it will mix even more when you add the egg and stir to coat it.
4. Put 1 egg in each muffin cup. Use a spoon to gently turn the egg until it is completely covered in the whipped cream mixture. Let the eggs sit, submerged, for at least 15 minutes. *Note* the yellow eggs came out VERY light. I would advice to leave the yellow in for 30 minutes OR premix your yellow food coloring with 1 drop of red food coloring before adding it to the whip cream to get a deeper yellow that will show up on the egg better.
5. When the 15 minutes are up, remove each egg from the whipped cream, rinse with cold water and dry. Done and done! beautiful, pastel, marbled easter eggs 🙂
These are so pretty!!! I’d love to try this next year. You should see ours… all cracked (thanks to 2 year old hands), and complete with stickers and googly eyes. 😂
